This is my second Kill Team and since my current army project is a Vostroyan themed Astra Militarum army, I wanted to lean into that. Alas, the actual Kasrkin box is a bit too contemporary for my tastes. No, it had to have actual greatcoats, more bionics and master crafted weaponry.

For that reason I relyed heavily on a box of Wargames Atlantics range of miniatures, specifically the Les Grognards, some Anvil Industry parts and raiding whatever bits were left over from other projects that might fit. Most weapons were lifted from some Skitarii troops, befitting the Vostroyans close relationship with the Mechanicum.

To be clear, if your are kitbashing a similar project using Anvil Industry parts that the parts are not a one-to-one fit. Extensive trimming and cutting is required to fit say the Minigun with pack a the marksmansrifle onto the torso. And you will probably need putty or green stuff to fill gaps or reconstruct trimmed bits.

Just os its clear, that this kitbash can be a hassle.

Painting Guide

This is only meant as a guideline. You can replace brands with whatever you prefer. My preference is generally for AK and Citadel paints, with metals mainly coming from the Scale75 range.

All models starts with a Black primer with a white zenithal. All highlights are gradual mixes between the previous colours. This is the starting point. The zenithal does not really do much in terms of colour transitions, but does give a better “read” of the model itself.

And note that the entire model got an allover oil wash made from Sansodor and Winsor & Newton Black part way through and then rehighlighted, with a pass of Matt Vanish before and after, and after the full paint job.

Coat:

  • AK Burnt Red – Base Layer
  • AK Brick Red – First highlight
  • AK Intense White mixed with Brick Red – Second thinner highlight

Armour:

  • Scale75 Decayed Metal – Base
  • Scale75 Amber Alchemy – Highlight

Note that once you apply the Matt Varnish the metals will dull considerably. If this is not what you want, then you will either need to reapply the metals or skip it until after your finish everything else.

Bearskins:

  • Citadel Contrast Black Templar – Base
  • Citadel Baneblade Brown – Medium drybrush
  • AK Deck Tan – Light drybrush

This is the only place where the zenithal adds to the paint job, adding much needed variation in the fur. When drybrushing, try to focus on a top to bottom movement, so only the upper most parts gets any colour.

Metal bits like weapons or bionic:

  • Scale75 Black Metal – Base
  • Scale75 Speed Metal – Highlight
